Lorde apologises for Taylor Swift comment
Singer Lorde has apologised for seemingly comparing her friendship with Taylor Swift to an autoimmune disease.
In a recent interview the New Zealander spoke of her long-time friendship with Taylor Swift, Lena Dunham and other big names in the entertainment industry.
“It’s like having a friend with very specific allergies,” Lorde, real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor, told the Guardian.
“There are certain places you can’t go together. Certain things you can’t do. There are these different sets of considerations within the friendship.
“It’s like having a friend with an autoimmune disease.”
Following the comments, the 20-year-old singer has been accused of ignorance and insensitivity.
“What an incredibly ignorant analogy to make,” Australian journalist Stephanie Anderson wrote on Twitter.
“I wonder how Selena Gomez feels about this.”
Gomez, who is also part of the so-called Swift Squad, was recently been diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disease.
Responding to Anderson’s tweet, Lorde apologised, saying she “didn’t mention Taylor” by name in the interview, but regardless she realised it was “insensitive”.
The two stars have been friends since 2014, with Swift throwing her a birthday party last November attended by several A-listers.
“Had the best birthday party I’ve ever had tonight surrounded by my New York City family,” Lorde wrote on Instagram.
“All organised by Tay who is as she says ‘a mom with no kids’. I am your kid and you love me so hard I could burst.”
