After months of waiting and campaigning, Radio Larne has been awarded a full-time FM community radio licence serving the Larne area by the broadcast regulator OFCOM.
The station has two years to start broadcasting on its five-year community licence and plans to launch by January 2020. Within the next two years, Radio Larne will also be rebranded with the new name ‘Coast Radio’.
Coast Radio will sound much the same as the current online-based station (www.radiolarne.co.uk), including features like the community diary, local news and locally produced radio shows as well as covering many local events across Larne. It will offer for the first time a service that is currently not available in the Larne area, one that will be for the benefit of the entire town, surrounding villages and local people, and which will distinguish it from all other commercial stations that can be received in Larne.
The station founder and director of Radio Larne, Lewis McAdam, said: “We are delighted that we have been awarded a full-time licence, but now the hard work of getting Coast Radio up and running starts as it will require a significant investment in new equipment, so time will need to be spent applying for the funding to launch the station.
“I would like to thank everyone who sent us messages of support over the past few months, as well as the people and businesses that helped us with feedback on our application at the time. I would also like to thank Larne football club for their support over the past year and hope to continue to work with them over the next coming years.
Radio Larne started broadcasting online at www.radiolarne.co.uk in August 2016 and was set up by local teenager Lewis McAdam, who has been involved in broadcasting from the age of nine on internet- and community-based stations in different areas in the UK. The other members of the Radio Larne team also have many years of experience either in radio or in business.
Lewis also said: “We look forward to bring you Larne’s first and only locally dedicated full time FM radio station. Keep an eye on our social media and website for the latest updates.
