Two people have been taken to hospital following a crash on the A1 road in Newry, County Down.

The NI Ambulance Service said it received a call about a two-vehicle collision at about 16:00 GMT.

One of those injured was taken by ambulance to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast while the other was taken to Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry.

The A1 has been closed in both directions, causing major delays on Wednesday evening.

The NI Ambulance Service said it despatched a rapid response paramedic, two emergency crews and two ambulance officers to the scene, near the Armagh Road junction. The air ambulance also attended.

The northbound carriageway of the A1, near its junction with the Camlough Road, is experiencing heavy traffic and police are advising motorists to seek an alternative route, if possible.

Southbound traffic is being diverted onto Belfast Road at Sheepbridge Park and Ride while northbound traffic is being re-routed at Camlough Road.
